Exercise can kill you

Posted by Paul to Family

I was running as somewhat usual this evening and during my 2nd kilometer I felt a sudden pain in my calf. I almost fell over as it felt like my entire calf muscle was just ripped off my leg by a passing motorist or something. Turns out I just pulled it a bit and had to cut my run short. Bummer.

To be on the safe side, I think Ill not do my normal run tomorrow either. Wouldnt due my any good to drop dead the day before my birthday.

-Cheers

“Blah” goes the brain pan

Posted by Paul to Development ,Family ,Random

Copyright (C) Erin Patrice O’BrienUgh. Today I found it damn hard to concentrate on anything. I have no energy and my allergies (im allergic to spring) are acting up so I have a nice layer of snot mist going on around me.

I though it was because I was starting to get burnt out on work (which my boss has several del.icio.us links for) but I didn’t fit the profiles for that.

Then I thought space invaders were stealing my creative thoughts; but Norad said the skies were clear of alien ships (and the guy at Norad was rather rude to me when I was asking about it).

My only other thought is that I’m just having a low energy kind of day. Tomorrow I will probably be back to the semi-normal state of unnaturally sparse normality that is the norm for me. And if you can say that 3 times fast I will give you a cookie.

-Cheers

‘Freddy Krueger’ attacker jailed

Posted by Paul to News ,Random

In a strange and unsettling twist, an Englishman start slashing on his friend when he was asleep with a home mane Krueger-esque glove and a bread knife. He was jailed today (hooray for society) but it is pretty fucked up that he said basically that the movie Nightmare on Elm Street made him do it. Link to the full story below:

BBC NEWS | England | ‘Freddy Krueger’ attacker jailed

He said that he didnt remember doing it (the slashing bit) and it looks like he tried to please insanity. The judge didnt buy it and gave him 4 1/2 years to think about it. I love it when a judge calls bullshit on a defendant; gives me a nice warm feeling to know that somewhere in the world a swindling defense attorney can’t use insanity unless they (the defendant) really are insane.

A coupon for your thoughts?

Posted by Paul to News ,Random

Everyone is on the lookout for deals at Best Buy or Target or where ever they happen to be at the moment. There are even a few sites strictly devoted to providing users with the best online coupons to all the hot sites.

The one I found recently, Coupon Chief, looks to be a good one for collecting coupons. While I didn’t find a lot of coupons for Newegg, I was pleasantly surprised to find ones for Target.com, Staples and other brick-and-mortar businesses. Most of them were things like 10% off order, 25% off product, or free shipping, but these were really good finds as shipping for items often costs as much as the item itself. There are also some good Dell coupons if you are interested in them (I’m not personally but many a web surfer prefers them).

Anyways, just passing on the findings so you don’t get reamed the next time you order online.

Maybe we can go sailing?

Posted by Paul to Random

Since my wife’s family use to go sailing I thought it would be great to kind of rekindle her inner child and take our family on a sailing vacation perhaps.

One idea I saw was st thomas sailing where they have sailing, scuba diving, or just kickin’ back on the beach. It includes something called a “luxury Catamaran” but I have little idea what that means. Anyways, its says from the site:

Trips aboard Scubadu are tailored to your needs. From your menu that you choose to the bays and beaches you desire.

So, if I wanted to go on a gold hunting adventure I think they may actually let me do it. That would be sweet as long as they don’t want a piece of my booty (not that booty you gutter-minded nose goblin).

Anyways, if she doesn’t want to do the sailing thing I’m sure someone will find it fun. If you do use it post pictures. If you find gold, let me know and I’ll count it for you ;)

More voices in my head(phones)

Posted by Paul to Family ,Random

Who’s there? This time, instead of Paula Radcliffe, it was Lance Armstrong that congradulated me on my longest run yet. I set my Nike+ to distance this evening and after it was done (it took a bit longer than I thought it would take, really) Lance came on and said his piece.

I wonder who else Im going to hear when next I run? I’ve tried the basic and the distance workouts so Ill do the timed workout tomorrow and see (well, hear) who’s going to give me praise for my longest time.

Maybe Phil Knight himself (the man who started and still owns Nike) will come on and say “Good job, son!”.

Serenity beats Star Wars in sci-fi movie poll

Posted by Paul to News ,Random

SerenityFor all of us that are huge fans of Firefly, a poll by SFX has just placed Serenity above the all powerful Star Wars epic. This is quite a surprise though, even though I like it better than Star Wars. But its also great to know that I’m not the only one who voted for it.

Details about it are here:

Serenity beats Star Wars in sci-fi movie poll | The Register

Maybe this will be enough for the producers to bring the show back. Having something more popular than Star Wars has to count for something, right?

New Vacation Idea

Posted by Paul to Random

Since we have started planning our vacation my wife and I have had our differences about where to go and what to do. I came across a site for Discount Universal Studios Tickets and thought “Hey, maybe we can go to Universal Studios Florida”. I’ve never been to Florida (mostly afraid of the weather) but a great many of my online chums live there and say its great.

Perhaps this would be the best place to go as it involves travel (we can drive there which should make her happy and visit sites on the way) and a fun place we’re visiting where the kids will have fun.

On second thought, maybe it would be easier to fly? Although, I hate flying unless I’m the one in the cockpit. And they’ll never let me back up there after what happened last time.

My iPod spoke to me

Posted by Paul to Family ,Random

Well, not the iPod itself, but the Nike+ dongle that attaches to it more likely.

I was doing my run as usual and listening to my tunes. When I was done I hit the menu button to end the workout and it gave me the stats for the run (which were better but could still stand some improvement). Anyways, when that was done, some chick named Paula got on and said “Congratulations, that was your longest workout yet!”.

First I’m like WTF? How did this English chick get into my iPod and how did she know what I run? Then my brain kicked back in and thought ‘nifty’.

Anyways, I did some checking and it was the voice of Paula Radcliffe, the women’s current long distance running world record holder. It was a little freakish at first and it took me a bit by surprise, but it was actually a pretty brilliant thing to add into the Nike+ package. Kudos to the designers for thinking up that one.

I wonder, though, what happens if I go longer than an hour? Will Tera Patrick come on and congradulate me on my ‘stamina’? One could only hope. :)

-Cheers

Schooled on funding school

Posted by Paul to Random

For those of you out there like me (well, at least the ones who use Sallie Mae for their school financing) you are probably fed up with a lot of there crap. I, personally, am tired of having to very, very slowly to the accented fellow on the other side of the phone whenever I have a questions about my account (not that I have a problem with accented fellows, but the language barrier is very annoying after a while). Coupled that with the serious mistreatment of my account by them, and you have a recipe for a lawsuit. At least that what my lawyer tells me, but she says that about everything (freaking lawyers).

Anyways, while searching for something better I came across Connecticut student loans that seems to be a bit better than Sallie Mae when it comes to funding college. I checked them out and they seem pretty legit. Its kind of a waste as I am really not interested in going back to school at this (or probably any other) time, but maybe it could help you.

Check it out if you need some info about something better than Sallie Mae loans.

-Cheers
